After two years of flat headcount, Irish higher education institutions are hiring again — but not in the shape most candidates expect. The growth is concentrated in a handful of disciplines and, increasingly, in professional services rather than academic grades.
Where the roles are
Analysis of vacancies advertised across the sector over the last twelve months shows three clear clusters.
- Health and life sciences — driven by expanded nursing, pharmacy and medicine intakes.
- Computing and data — including a growing number of teaching-focused contracts.
- Research support and compliance — grant management, research integrity and data protection.
The professional services shift
Roughly two in five advertised posts are now professional, technical or administrative rather than academic. That is a meaningful change from the pre-2024 pattern.
“We are not replacing lecturers one for one. We are building the infrastructure that lets the academics we already have do more.” — HR director at an Irish technological university
Contract types are changing too
- Fixed-term research contracts remain the most common entry route.
- Permanent lecturer posts are being advertised earlier in the academic year.
- Part-time and job-share arrangements are appearing in senior professional roles for the first time.
